IRROULEGUY'S WINE

In the heart of the green lands of the Basque Country, the Cave d'Irouléguy is a haven of culture, a place where traditions and values come together around an exceptional product, the wine of Irouléguy. Our wines have the liveliness, elegance and aromatic charm of mountain vines. Our emblematic cuvées, organic or sulfite-free, are each the expression and the fruit of the work of our winegrowers. The richness and diversity of our grape varieties make our wines, vintage after vintage, products of emotion and exaltation of the senses.

The makhila is a stick made of loquat wood, of a beautiful red, which has a point in its handle and a strap which allows it to be brandished. This is how visitors described it in the 19th century. We find it in particular in a series of watercolors from 1823. This series brings together a hundred illustrations representing the different trades of the time: fishermen, cooks, bakers, etc. The vast majority of these characters are accompanied by a makhila. These drawings show to what extent the makhila accompanied the life of the Basque. Historian Philippe Veyrin comments on these representations of the Basque costume of the time: “Pants are beginning to replace the breeches of the previous century, which are still resisting.
